The music on “Selling Sunset” and “The Kardashians” should be fun and silly, says the songwriter.

The first lines of Ysa Fernandez’s iconic song, “Move”, go like this: “I have high heels and high standards / I don’t want to hear you talk, I don’t need those lines / They say it’s as flying as all the time / Catch me out, I’m on my way. ”

For the uninitiated, “Move” is one of 20 songs he wrote for reality shows like For sale sunset And Keeping up with the Kardashians. The 25-year-old musician writes all of her songs from her studio in Nashville as a creative outlet and a way to fund her music career (in addition to infamous reality TV music, she writes music on her own).

Ysa is not the only one songwriter who writes music for reality shows, and technically it doesn’t even work for them. In Small Talk mode, Ysa told us about her writing process, listening to her songs play as the Kardashians strut across the screen, and what it was like to see people drag her music to TikTok during Selling sunset ‘s first.

Mashable: What made you start writing music for reality TV?

I am a full time musician here in Nashville. During a pandemic I started working with this company called Vanacore Music, which is crazy. They are fantastic. And basically, I just write a lot of songs, send them to these companies and then they propose them for all these shows.

Why Reality Music?

It’s so funny because I don’t actually watch much TV. I didn’t grow up with TV, so it’s kind of funny that I have a lot of songs playing [these] Shows. Now, oh my God, I’m obsessed with Kardashian And For sale sunset. It’s so funny. I was just writing with people here in town who wrote music for them. So I just fell into it. And I realized that I’m good at it, and it’s so much fun. So I can just write all day and send them these things, and they’re like, “Oh, ok, that’s great.”

Can you explain the typical song writing process for you? How is writing these songs different from writing your own music?

It is the beginning of the song that makes it different. I produce my music and write, and sometimes I have collaborators, but most of the time I’m alone in my studio here in Nashville. And I would say songs for me as an artist – and sometimes these songs that go into shows too – but songs from the artist’s point of view, usually come from a story, like some guy broke up with me or something happened with my friend. It’s more personal.

And then sometimes I want to write a funny song. Like, something about dancing, something about getting something, about moving. And it’s kind of a cleaning in a way when you write, especially if you write a lot of heavy and exciting music, write funny and stupid songs too.

What’s your favorite song you’ve written for TV?

One I’ve written that has been featured in quite a few shows … [My friend and I] wrote this hilarious song and I was like “This has to go somewhere”. Eventually it was placed on the Kardashian first. That’s what he plays when he comes out of a Lambo. And it’s so iconic. So this is probably my favorite song, and it’s also the one that’s on my Spotify artist. It’s called “Move” and it’s so much fun.

How does it feel when people started not necessarily crawling, but talking about the music on TikTok?

Oh, they were definitely dragging him, which is so funny to me. Nothing is guaranteed in this business. We are just creators making this music and it may or may not be featured on the show. It’s not like I’m working on these shows. You never know what the bag is. So it was fun. I have some songs that have been posted For sale sunsetand I saw people dragging the music. And yes, this music is so hilarious, so fun to create, but at the same time yes, sometimes it is so stupid.

It’s not taking yourself too seriously, especially on the artistic side. I’m producing these tracks and singing to them. I like to be silly. It’s so, so funny. And yes, my TikTok has been hilarious recently because of these videos and some people absolutely hate me for it. Some people say, “Keep following you girl” and others say “I like listening to you in the morning, da da da. “I just think it’s so funny.

Did it open you up to a new online community?

It sure did. It was really funny because I posted that video and I was like “I’m about to get spam”. I thought I was going to be hated for that, which is cool too. I’m not pressed in any way. He’s not wrapped up in my ego or anything. It’s just fun.

How can you not run out of ideas?

It’s like any songwriter. It doesn’t matter what you’re writing for, you’re writing as an artist, you’re writing for someone else, you’re writing with something in mind. The themes will always be recurring, whether they are about being a boss or, like, my boyfriend broke up with me and i’m so sad. You know what I mean? How can we write this in a way that hasn’t been written before? I’m a boss – you can say it a million ways, and it’s still so funny. It’s kind of a challenge.

What’s your favorite reality show?

I love the Kardashian, and I love For sale sunset. Not just because I put some music in there, but I just think it’s just as fun as the shows. Also Married at first sight. It is that good.

Do you have a dream show to attend?

How much bigger can you get of the Kardashian? He was crazy enough for me.
